In the current market, it is an unfortunate fact that a number of employers are attempting to cut corners with the staff they are looking to recruit. If you have managed to find a role of employment through sites that are connected with the UK Jobs Guide it is important for you to check through your contact when you start.
Far too many people fail to do this and only check the clauses when a problem has already arisen. For a start, make sure the salary is as discussed during the interview: you would be shocked to learn just how many employers try to save a buck or two once you are taken on.
You must make sure you have the equivalent of 4 weeks holiday entitlement, plus bank holidays. If you do not work fulltime, this should equate to a 4 week equivalent in time off per year.
Importantly, check the policy relating to sickness. Employers very often go too far in this regard, in fact, to the point of downright harassment at times, so make sure you are happy with their policy regarding reporting sickness and what happens when you come back to work. Employers regularly forget that people cannot help being sick!
Check out the grievance and disciplinary procedures, as all companies are obliged to follow set legislation in this regard. Ensure the work environment is entirely safe for you and that nothing is likely to pose a risk to your health and safety.
If there are any major problems with the contract of employment being offered to you, it is recommended that you turn the job down and report to the relevant authorities straight away. Do not just allow them to carry on treating future employees in the same way.
