Finding Legal Representation

If you are currently looking for legal representation, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed. Unless you happen to be an expert on redundancy law, for example, or have hired multiple lawyers in the past, finding the right person to handle your case can be daunting.

However, by following a few basic guidelines, it is possible to make the business a whole lot easier. To start with, you should immediately ask amongst your close friends and family. These people with whom you are very well-acquainted, and who know your character, will more than likely be able to recommend a professional suited to your case and your personality.

Once you have a short list of names to work with, it is a good idea to get online and find out as much about the lawyers in question as possible. If you can, read client reviews along with those from colleagues and institutions. This should give you a well-rounded impression of what the person is like to work with. (more...)

Preparing an Application for a Degree in Law

If you have your heart set on becoming a lawyer, you may well be feeling a little anxious over the business of applying to and being accepted by a good law school. Before you can go on to work somewhere like Chattertons solicitors Lincoln, for example, you're going to have to plough through a great deal of hard work, and the first steps on this journey involve preparing an excellent university application.

Your chances of getting into a good law programme can be greatly improved even while you are still at school. Obviously, you will need to work as hard as you can and achieve the best possible marks, and in addition, it is a good idea to participate in certain extra-curricular activities.

Employment Law Issues When Starting a New Job

In the current market, it is an unfortunate fact that a number of employers are attempting to cut corners with the staff they are looking to recruit. If you have managed to find a role of employment through sites that are connected with the UK Jobs Guide it is important for you to check through your contact when you start.

Far too many people fail to do this and only check the clauses when a problem has already arisen. For a start, make sure the salary is as discussed during the interview: you would be shocked to learn just how many employers try to save a buck or two once you are taken on.

You must make sure you have the equivalent of 4 weeks holiday entitlement, plus bank holidays. If you do not work fulltime, this should equate to a 4 week equivalent in time off per year. (more...)

Charity Law Compliance

Charities are subject to a body of law known as charity law. Therefore it is always advisable for anyone interesting in starting a charitable organisation to take legal advice from specialised charity law solicitors as to what their obligations are.

To begin with there are a number of legal requirements about setting up an organisation with charitable status. The legislation concerning registration of charities can be subject to change and therefore it is important to keep abreast with changes in legislation through organisations such as the Charities Advisory Trust.

A second key area in which charities must ensure compliance with the law is through their fundraising. Businesses are profit driven and therefore unless they are shareholder based they have a degree of flexibility with how they spend their money. (more...)

Outsource your Employment Law Needs

All businesses require a certain amount of professionalism within their human resources department. Dealing with employment matters has become an industry in itself and for a lot of smaller companies it can be difficult to stay abreast of developments in employment legislation. Larger companies are often able to dedicate a staff member to this area specifically and some companies can even afford a whole human resources department to oversee staffing and employment matters.

It is possible for smaller businesses to outsource their employment management issues to legal firms which specialise in offering on-call legal advice on all employment related issues. Rather than having to carry out employment law training for any of their staff a company can just hire a legal team to provide the service for them.

The benefits of such a service are threefold. To begin with it saves on hiring a new member of staff to deal with employment law issues. Secondly by out-sourcing this service you are then covered by the liability insurance of that legal team. Finally you will then always have legal representation should any employees take any kind of a claim to an employment tribunal. (more...)

Understanding Probate

Probate is essentially the legal process of administering the provisions of a deceased person's will. When you make a will you must nominate an individual to be the executor of the will. That is the person charged with actually carrying out your financial wishes. Upon your death the court must essentially approve this by issuing a grant of probate giving the executor the legal power to do so.

Often dealing with a will is a relatively simple process in that it has been fully understood in advance what a deceased person's wishes were. In this case an appointed executor can either apply directly to the court for a grant of probate or alternatively enlist the services of a solicitor to do so on their behalf. The latter option may be less time consuming as the executor will not have to deal with the different forms needed to apply. A trained solicitor will have plenty of experience with probate and so will ensure all documentation is properly filled out. Probate costs are dependent on whether you choose to apply for it yourself or alternatively enlist a solicitor. Even amongst solicitor firms costs can vary depending on whether they charge a fixed fee or a percentage of the overall estate. It is worth calculating the best option taking into account the overall value of the estate.

When someone dies without making a will they are said to be intestate and a separate application must be carried out. (more...)

Protecting your Intellectual Property

Many people and businesses don't fully understand the importance of protecting their intellectual property rights, because they don't really know what intellectual property law is. This branch of law is one of the most important for many businesses involved in the cutting edge of product development.

For businesses that are developing new technology for running shoes, for research charities trying to find cures for cancer and also for an author writing a novel – all of these people should be aware of what intellectual property law is and how best they can protect their intellectual property. If another company steals your technology, or borrows your research or plagiarises your writing they have infringed upon your intellectual property and can be liable for this infringement.

Perhaps the easiest way to understand it is to Know what it is not. Actual property such as your house cannot just be taken by another individual. That would be considered theft. Likewise it is not legal to borrow someone's car without asking permission first. This is also theft. (more...)

What they mean by 'legal heath' is that they will make certain that a company is up to date and that they have and will continue to comply with the latest legal policies and procedures with respect to current contracts and agreements. (more...)

The Importance of Fire Safety

Last year there were nearly a half a million fires in the UK. About seventy percent of them occurred in England and most were in urban areas. Fortunately, response times for firefighters and emergency personnel have improved dramatically over the past decade, which is why the number of fire deaths (450) was at a twenty-year low.

But one source of constant concern for authorities is public awareness of basic health & safety training oxford . According to recent statistics, most fires are the result of heating equipment. We are talking about stoves, space heaters, fireplaces and boilers.

As unbelievable as it may seem, most people do not observe basic fire prevention in the home. For example, the number of fires that occur because homeowners do not have a sturdy screen in front of their fireplace boggles the mind. Some folks even use their stoves to heat their homes, which is a recipe for disaster. Sadly even professionals occasionally ignore fire safety. (more...)
